Cheap Calls to India from the UK and US (2026 Guide)

Call Indian mobiles and landlines for a few cents a minute, pay-as-you-go. Monthly cost examples, IST time tips, +91 dialling and options compared.

The cheapest way to call India depends on who you are calling. If they have WhatsApp and good data, an app call is free. To reach an Indian mobile or landline directly, a pay-as-you-go calling service is usually cheapest: on callmins, calls to India cost $0.059/minute to mobiles and $0.052/minute to landlines, with no subscription and no connection fee. A $5 top-up buys 84 minutes to an Indian mobile.

India is one of the cheaper long-distance destinations in the world, because Indian carriers compete hard and termination fees are low. That is good news if you call home a lot, and it means you should be suspicious of anyone charging you a dollar a minute.

How much does it cost to call India?

On callmins, India is priced per started minute from your wallet balance:

  • Indian mobiles: $0.059/min. A 10-minute call costs $0.59.
  • Indian landlines: $0.052/min. A 10-minute call costs $0.52.
  • SMS to India: $0.31 per message, handy for a quick note when a call would wake someone.

You can see India next to every other destination on the callmins call rates page.

What a month of calling India actually costs

Per-minute prices are hard to picture, so here are common family-call patterns and what each would cost in a month on callmins:

Calling patternMinutes a monthMonthly cost
Weekly 20-minute call to a parent's mobile87$5.13
Daily 10-minute check-in on a mobile300$17.70
Sunday 45-minute call to grandparents' landline196$10.19
Two 15-minute calls a month to a bank or office landline30$1.56
Festival week: an hour a day for 7 days, mobiles420$24.78

Even the daily check-in costs less than most phone add-ons, and you don't pay anything in a month when you don't call. That is the main difference between pay-as-you-go and a subscription: subscriptions win only if you reliably use most of the minutes you pay for.

Ways to call India compared

WhatsApp and other app calls

WhatsApp is close to universal in India, and an app-to-app call costs nothing beyond data. For video calls with family who are comfortable with smartphones, it is hard to beat. It falls short when an older relative keeps a basic phone, when someone is in an area with weak mobile data, and whenever you need to call a business, a hospital, a school or a government office, none of which will pick up a WhatsApp call from an unknown contact.

Your mobile carrier's international add-on

UK and US carriers sell international bundles or add-ons, usually as a monthly fee with a minutes allowance, and charge standard international rates outside it. The convenience is real: you dial from your normal phone. But standard out-of-bundle rates to India are typically far higher than VoIP prices, and it is easy to go over an allowance without noticing. Check your carrier's current India rate before relying on it.

Calling cards

Prepaid India calling cards still exist and work from any phone: you dial an access number, enter a PIN, then dial India. Watch the small print. Many cards add connection or maintenance fees, round calls up in large increments, or let the balance expire. The headline per-minute price is often not what you end up paying.

Pay-as-you-go calling apps

Services like callmins connect over the internet on your side and over the normal phone network on theirs. The person in India just sees an incoming international call on whatever phone they have. You pay a published per-minute rate from a prepaid balance. callmins runs in your browser, so you can call from a laptop without installing anything, and there is an Android app too.

When to call India: IST time-zone tips

India uses a single time zone, India Standard Time (IST), at UTC+5:30. India does not observe daylight saving time, so the gap to you changes twice a year when the UK and US clocks move:

  • UK: India is 4½ hours ahead during British Summer Time (late March to late October) and 5½ hours ahead in winter.
  • US Eastern: India is 9½ hours ahead in summer and 10½ hours ahead in winter.
  • US Pacific: India is 12½ hours ahead in summer and 13½ hours ahead in winter.

From the UK, early evening (6–8 PM) lands at 10:30 PM to 1:30 AM in India, which is too late for most parents; a lunchtime call works better. From the US East Coast, 8–9 AM your time is evening in India, which is when most families are home. The half-hour offset catches people out, so add a second clock for IST on your phone.

How to dial an Indian number

India's country code is +91. Enter numbers in international format and drop any leading 0:

  • Mobiles have 10 digits and start with 6, 7, 8 or 9. Dial +91 followed by the 10 digits, for example +91 98xxx xxxxx. If the number is written as 098xxx xxxxx, remove the 0.
  • Landlines combine an STD area code and a local number, 10 digits in total without the leading 0. Mumbai is 22, Delhi is 11, Bengaluru is 80, so a Delhi landline written as 011 2xxx xxxx becomes +91 11 2xxx xxxx.
  • Toll-free numbers(1800 and similar) are often not reachable from abroad. Look for an alternative landline number on the organisation's website.

The callmins dialer shows the per-minute rate before it connects, so you can tell straight away whether you have typed a mobile or a landline.

Let family in India reach you on a UK or US number

Calling out is half the problem. The other half is being reachable when you move abroad, change SIMs, or travel. Many people in India screen unknown international numbers because of spam calls, so a stable number your family has saved makes a real difference.

With a virtual phone number on callmins, you get a real UK or US number that rings in your browser or the app, wherever you are:

  • UK (+44) number: $3.00/month + $2.00 setup. A one-time ID check is required before your first UK number. See how a UK number works.
  • US (+1) number: $2.00/month + $1.00 setup, available instantly.

Use the same number as caller ID when you ring India, so your parents see a number they recognise every time. Be clear with family about cost: when someone in India dials a +44 or +1 number, their own carrier charges them its international rate, so for long conversations it is usually cheaper for you to call them, or for them to send you a message asking you to ring back.

Calling Indian banks, offices and businesses from abroad

Plenty of calls to India are not family calls. NRIs regularly need to ring a bank branch about an account, a property manager, a tenant, a school, or a doctor's clinic. These calls tend to involve waiting on hold, which is where pricing matters most: twenty minutes on hold to a landline costs $1.04 on callmins, while the same wait on an out-of-bundle carrier rate can cost many times that.

A few practical points. Many Indian organisations publish a regular landline alongside their toll-free number specifically for overseas customers, so look for an "NRI" or "calling from abroad" contact. Have your account details ready before you dial, and call during Indian business hours (roughly 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM IST on weekdays), which for UK callers is early morning to lunchtime.

Tips for cheaper calls to India

  1. Call mobiles when you can. Most people in India are reachable on a mobile, and you can call one for $1.77 for half an hour.
  2. Mix WhatsApp and phone calls. Use WhatsApp video for the relatives with good data, and a regular call for the ones without.
  3. Top up small and often. With pay-as-you-go there is no reason to prepay months of calls. Top up $5, see how long it lasts, and adjust.
  4. Save numbers in +91 format. It avoids misdials, and each failed attempt that reaches a wrong number costs a billed minute.
