Virtual Number for WhatsApp: How to Set One Up Safely (2026)

How to use a virtual number for WhatsApp: how verification works, why free public numbers are unsafe, and how to set up and keep a US or UK number.

Yes, you can use a virtual number for WhatsApp. WhatsApp only needs a number that can receive its six-digit code by SMS or voice call, and a private virtual number from a real carrier can do both. On callmins a US (+1) number costs $2.00/month + $1.00 setup and works immediately; a UK (+44) number costs $3.00/month + $2.00 setupafter a one-time ID check. What you should avoid is the free public "receive SMS online" sites: those numbers are shared, and anyone who reads your code can take over your account.

This guide covers how WhatsApp verification actually works, why free numbers are risky, how to set WhatsApp up on a callmins number step by step, and how to make sure you don't lose the account later.

How WhatsApp verification works

When you register, WhatsApp asks for your phone number and sends a one-time code to it, normally by SMS. If the text doesn't arrive, you can ask for a voice call instead, and an automated voice reads the code out. You type the code into the app and the account is tied to that number.

Three things follow from that:

  • The number doesn't need to be in your phone.WhatsApp checks that you can receive the code, not that the number lives on the SIM in the handset. That's why a virtual number works.
  • Whoever receives the code controls the account. That's the whole security model, and it's why who else can see your number's messages matters so much.
  • You may need the code again. WhatsApp asks you to re-verify when you move to a new phone, reinstall the app, or sometimes after a long gap. If you no longer control the number at that point, you can be locked out.

Why free WhatsApp numbers fail, and why they're unsafe

Search for "free second phone number for WhatsApp" and you'll find sites listing public numbers with an inbox anyone can read. They look like a shortcut. In practice they cause three problems.

They're shared

Every visitor to the site sees the same inbox. When your WhatsApp code lands there, so can anyone else's request for that number, and anyone watching the page can read your code.

They're recycled

Public numbers rotate constantly. The number you registered today may belong to a stranger next month. When that person, or the next visitor to the site, requests a WhatsApp code for it, they can sign in as you and see new messages sent to the account.

They're often already blocked

Because these numbers are used by thousands of people, many services recognise and refuse them. You can spend an hour cycling through numbers and still not get a code.

A free number might be acceptable for a throwaway sign-up you'll never need again. For WhatsApp, where the number is your account, it's the wrong tool. Our guide to getting a private virtual phone number without a SIM explains how a dedicated number differs.

US or UK number for WhatsApp?

WhatsApp works the same on either. Pick based on who you talk to and how fast you need it:

  • US (+1) numbers are active straight after you buy them, so you can verify WhatsApp within minutes. Good if your contacts are in North America or you just want a second account quickly.
  • UK (+44) numbers need a one-time identity check first: you upload an ID and a proof of address, and our carrier reviews them, usually within a couple of days. Worth the wait if your family, clients or customers are in the UK and you want them to see a familiar +44 number. The UK virtual number page explains what the check involves.

How to set up WhatsApp on a callmins virtual number

  1. Create a free callmins account.
  2. Buy a US or UK number from the Numbers section of the Store. For a UK number, complete the ID check first.
  3. Open callmins in a browser tab or the mobile app and leave it signed in, so you can see incoming texts and calls.
  4. Install WhatsApp (or WhatsApp Business) and enter your new number with its country code: +1 for US, +44 for UK.
  5. Wait for the SMS code to appear in your callmins Messages tab and type it into WhatsApp. If it hasn't arrived after the timer runs out, choose Call me. The call rings in callmins and you answer it to hear the code.
  6. Turn on two-step verification in WhatsApp (Settings, then Account). It adds a PIN that anyone re-registering your number would also need.

Receiving SMS and calls on your callmins number is free, so the verification itself costs nothing beyond the number. If a code never arrives, contact us at info@callmins.com and we'll look into it.

Keep the number, keep the account

This is the part most guides skip. Your WhatsApp account is tied to the number, not the phone. If you cancel the number, it's released and can eventually be given to someone else, who could then register WhatsApp on it. You'd also have no way to receive a code the next time WhatsApp asks you to re-verify.

  • Keep the subscription active for as long as you use the WhatsApp account.
  • Keep enough in your wallet, or a valid card on file, so renewals don't fail.
  • Turn on two-step verification and add a recovery email in WhatsApp.
  • If you want to stop using the number, first change the number in WhatsApp (Settings, Account, Change number), then cancel.

WhatsApp Business on a second number

A common setup is personal WhatsApp on your mobile number and WhatsApp Business on a virtual number. WhatsApp Business is a separate app, so both can run on the same phone, each with its own number. Customers message the business number; your personal chats stay separate. You can also call customers from the same number using callmins, so they see one consistent business number for calls, texts and WhatsApp. If you send texts to customers in bulk, look at callmins SMS too.

Common questions

Is it legal to use a virtual number for WhatsApp?

Yes. WhatsApp allows any number you own and can receive codes on. What it doesn't allow is spam or impersonation, whatever number you use.

Will WhatsApp reject a virtual number?

WhatsApp generally accepts private virtual numbers from licensed carriers. Like every service, it can occasionally refuse a number, and other apps and some banks are stricter about VoIP numbers than WhatsApp is. If a particular service matters to you, test it before relying on the number.

Do I need the callmins app open all the time?

Only when WhatsApp sends you a code. Day to day, WhatsApp runs on its own over your internet connection.

Can I move my existing WhatsApp account to a virtual number?

Yes. Buy the number first, then use WhatsApp's Change number feature (Settings, Account, Change number). WhatsApp sends a code to the new number, and your chats, groups and settings move across. You can choose whether to notify your contacts about the change.

Can I run two WhatsApp accounts on one phone?

Yes. The simplest way is WhatsApp on one number and WhatsApp Business on the other, as two separate apps. Recent versions of WhatsApp on Android also let you add a second account inside the same app. Either way, each account needs its own number that can receive a code, which is exactly what a second virtual number gives you.

How much does a virtual number for WhatsApp cost?

From $2.00/monthplus a one-off setup fee on callmins. There's no extra charge for receiving the verification code.

The short version

Use a private virtual number, not a free public one. Verify by SMS or voice call, turn on two-step verification, and keep the number active for as long as you keep the account.
