UK Virtual Mobile Number for Receiving SMS Without a UK SIM

Receive UK verification codes, 2FA and delivery texts on a +44 7 virtual mobile number without a UK SIM. What works, what doesn't, and how to set one up.

Yes, you can receive UK text messages without a UK SIM. A UK virtual mobile number is a real +44 7… number that lives in an app or browser, so verification codes, two-factor texts and delivery updates sent to it land in your inbox wherever you are. On callmins one costs $3.00/month + $2.00 setup, receiving SMS on it is free, and it needs a one-time ID and proof-of-address check before you buy, which usually takes a couple of days. Most services deliver to it, but some banks and five-digit shortcodes don't, so test anything important.

This post is about one job: receiving UK SMS reliably when you're not on a UK network. If you want calls, pricing and the full product details, see the UK virtual phone number page.

What is a UK virtual mobile number?

It's a number from the UK mobile range (it starts +44 7, or 07 when written the UK way) that a licensed carrier assigns to a provider instead of to a SIM. When someone texts it, the carrier hands the message to the provider, which shows it to you in an app or browser. To the sender it looks like any other UK mobile. callmins numbers come from our carrier, Telnyx.

The "mobile" part matters for SMS. Plenty of UK virtual numbers sold online are landline-style 01, 02 or 03 numbers. Those can take calls, but many services won't send texts to them at all, because UK landlines don't normally receive SMS.

Who needs a UK number just for texts?

  • Expats and people who've moved abroad. Your UK bank, GP surgery, HMRC account or pension provider still texts your old number. Keeping a UK mobile on roaming is expensive; a virtual number keeps those texts coming for a few dollars a month.
  • Overseas students.Universities, letting agents, delivery firms and UK apps often want a UK mobile before you've arrived or after you've gone home for the summer.
  • Non-residents with UK accounts. If you own UK property, run a UK company, or bank in the UK from abroad, the codes still need somewhere to land.
  • Businesses. A UK number for supplier, courier and customer texts keeps them off a personal phone and gives you a UK presence without a UK office.

What works and what doesn't

No provider can honestly promise that every UK service will text a virtual number. Here's what to expect.

Usually works

  • Texts from ordinary numbers: friends, landlords, tradespeople, and businesses that text from a normal UK or international number.
  • Many verification codes and 2FA texts from apps and websites. Senders that show a name instead of a number usually get through too, but test any account that matters before you rely on it.
  • Delivery and appointment texts from couriers, shops, dentists and GP surgeries.

Sometimes doesn't

  • Some banks and payment services.A few check the number type and refuse anything they classify as VoIP, or only send codes to numbers on a major UK mobile network. If one rejects the number, there's nothing the provider can change; use a physical SIM or the bank's app-based approval instead.
  • Five-digit shortcodes.Texts sent from shortcodes (like 61234) are routed through the mobile networks' own agreements and often don't reach virtual numbers. Premium-rate and competition texts are the usual examples.
  • Services that tie the number to a SIM.Anything that checks the network the number is registered to, or expects to see the SIM in your phone, won't work with any virtual number.

The practical rule: before you switch an important account to the new number, have that service send a code to it once. If it arrives, it'll keep arriving.

Free SMS inbox sites vs a dedicated UK number

Search for "receive SMS online UK" and you'll find sites offering free UK numbers. They work very differently from a number you rent.

Free inboxes are fine for a throwaway sign-up you never need again. For anything tied to your money, identity or a long-running account, use a number only you can read.

What it costs on callmins

  • The number: $3.00 a month, plus a one-off $2.00 setup fee with the first month. That's $5.00 up front and $38.00 for the first year.
  • Receiving SMS: free, however many you get.
  • Receiving calls: also free.
  • Replying: $0.09 per text to a UK number. Replies go out from your +44 number, so the other person can text you back. Rates for other countries are on the international SMS rates page.

There's no contract. The rent renews monthly from your wallet; if the balance runs short you get three days to top up before the number is released.

How to set up a UK number for SMS on callmins

  1. Create an account. Sign up for free with email or Google. You confirm your phone with a one-time code, sent to any phone you already have.
  2. Complete the ID check. Open Numbersand choose the United Kingdom. Upload an ID document (passport, driving licence or national ID) and a proof of address from the last three months. The address doesn't have to be in the UK. UK rules require the carrier to know who holds each number; the review usually takes a couple of days and costs nothing.
  3. Top up. Add at least $5.00 to cover the first month and the setup fee, plus a little extra if you want to reply to texts.
  4. Pick your +44 7 numberfrom the list and confirm. It's live in under a minute.
  5. Send it a test text from another phone. It appears in Messages in real time, in the browser and the app.
  6. Move your accounts over one at a time, sending a test code from each service before you remove the old number.

Common questions

Can I receive SMS from outside the UK on it?

Yes. Texts from international senders arrive the same way as UK ones. What matters is whether the sender is willing to text a virtual number, not where they are.

Can I keep my old UK mobile number instead?

A virtual number is a new number. If you need to keep an existing UK mobile, talk to your network about keeping it active, or email info@callmins.com before you buy to ask about your options.

Can I use it for WhatsApp or Telegram?

Usually. Both send their code by SMS or a call, and both reach a callmins number. Either app can refuse a number it flags as VoIP, so try it before you rely on it.

Does the number expire if I don't use it?

No. It stays yours as long as the monthly rent is paid, whether you receive one text a year or a hundred a day.
