Questions people ask
Which country has the code +1?
+1 is the dialling code for the United States. The same code is also used by American Samoa, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda and others.
Is +1 the same as 001?
Yes. The plus sign stands for whatever exit code your phone network uses: 00 in the UK and most of the world, 011 in the US and Canada. A mobile phone converts + automatically, so saving numbers as +1 makes them work from any country.
How do I write a phone number from the United States in international format?
Start with +1, then the number. For example (201) 555-0123 becomes +1 201 555 0123, or +12015550123 with no spaces (E.164 format, the form apps and forms usually want).
What is the exit code in the United States?
From the US, Canada and other +1 countries, the international exit code is 011. Calls between +1 countries need only 1 and the 10-digit number.
I got a missed call from +1. Should I call back?
Only if you know someone there. Unexpected one-ring calls from abroad are a known scam ("wangiri"): calling back can connect you to a premium-rate line. Search the number first, or paste it into the callmins country-code lookup to see where it's from and whether it's a mobile or landline.
