How to dial an international number
- Exit code. 011 from the US or Canada, 00 from the UK and most other countries, 0011 from Australia. On a mobile, hold 0 to type + instead.
- Country code. The 1–3 digits listed here.
- The number. Leave out the leading 0 many countries use at home: UK 020 7946 0000 becomes +44 20 7946 0000.
Countries by code
Got a call from an unfamiliar code? Here is every code outside +1, in order. +1 countries are told apart by area code: see the area code directory for the US and Canada.
Questions people ask
What is a country code?
A country code is the 1–3 digit prefix that routes an international call to a country's phone network: +1 for the US and Canada, +44 for the UK, +91 for India. You dial it after your own exit code (011 from the US, 00 from most countries) or after + on a mobile.
What is the difference between a country code and an exit code?
The exit code gets your call out of your own country (011 in the US and Canada, 00 in the UK and most of the world). The country code then picks the destination. On a mobile, + replaces the exit code everywhere.
Why do several countries share +1?
+1 is the North American Numbering Plan: the US, Canada and about 20 Caribbean and Pacific territories share it, and each is told apart by its 3-digit area code (876 for Jamaica, for example).
